Extraordinary British Aesthetic period fireplace surround by architect Thomas Jeckyll (1827-1881) for ironmonger firm Barnard, Bishop & Barnards. In brass, fitted with beautifully hand painted glazed ceramic tiles from Doulton & Co. lavishly depicting flowers and foliage as well as two butterflies (tribute to Jeckyll). Brass with Anglo-Japanese motifs typical for Jeckyll, including two signature medallions signifying both the designer (two butterflies/dragonflies) and the maker (four bees). Tiles stamped on verso. The whole in mint condition.
