Lajos Pogany was born Ferenc Lajos Posner in Tasnad, Hungary in 1873 to a Jewish family. He completed his painting studies in Budapest and continued his training in Munich and Paris. From 1900 until 1915 he worked in London and Vienna painting portraits of high society. Pogany returned to Hungary in 1915 and continued to paint locally until his death in 1941.
